IDPA celebrates National Women’s Month

The International Defensive Pistol Associate (IDPA) is celebrating National Women’s Month now through March 31st.  This global observance highlights women’s contributions to society and, according to IDPA Executive Director Joyce Wilson, is especially meaningful to her organization. “IDPA is the only shooting sport run by women”, she says, “and we want to recognize all of our female shooters and leaders in the sport.”

While we celebrate and appreciate all our members, March is Women’s Month.

Joyce has been in the firearms industry for 18 years and has been at the helm of the 28,000-member IDPA organization since 2007.  “ I am honored to lead these confident, competent, accomplished and inspiring women. Each of us brings something unique and fresh to the table—bouncing ideas off one another, sharing experience and expertise and enjoying the synergy that we have together.”

“One obstacle women encounter in our space is a lack of female mentors.  Every woman who purchases, owns, or uses firearms and helps train other women can fill that void.  It is importantfor all of us to inspire other women by being a role model and taking responsibility for our own safety.”

Assisting Joyce in this endeavor are IDPA Operations Manager Mandy Bachman and IDPA Business Development Officer Kitty Richards. Bachman is the seventeenth female to make Master class shooter in IDPA, has won numerous competitions and shoots professionally.  Richards has been shooting IDPA competitions since 2002 and is also an Instructor for IDPA officials.

“With women as the fastest growing segment of gun owners, we want to recognize this observance by honoring women in our sport and encouraging others to join us. Through the end of March, we will be offering a special opportunity. For any existing member of our sport who brings a non-member woman to the range andposts a range selfie on their personal social media account by March 31st using the hashtag #IDPALadies we will enter both shooters in a drawing for a special prize package from IDPA.”

“Shooting is a great opportunity to make friends, build confidence and learn a life-saving skill”, says Joyce.  “What better way to celebrate National Women’s Month?”
