IDPA Previews Stages From This Weekend’s Puerto Rico IDPA Nationals

BERRYVILLE, Ark. – Shooters from Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela with go head-to-head for the Puerto Rico IDPA National Championship title this weekend, and the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is giving you a look at the 12 stage course of fire they’ll face.

Diagrams of all 12 stages of the championship, along with their scenarios and the instructions shooters will receive, are posted on IDPA’s DOWN ZERO Blog. Stages for this and other matches can be found on the blog under Stage Diagrams.

The 2013 Puerto Rico IDPA National Championship takes place in Caguas, Puerto Rico on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17. The RL Shooting Club is hosting the championship which was organized by match director Max Rivera and assistant match director Tom Yost of Smith & Wesson, one of the major match sponsors.

Over 150 shooters are expected to compete for the title in Custom Defensive Pistol, Enhanced Service Pistol, Stock Service Pistol, Stock Service Revolver and Enhanced Service Revolver, the five divisions within IDPA.

The Puerto Rico IDPA Nationals have received significant support from the shooting sports industry. The championship is being sponsored by Blade-Tech, Century International Arms, Comp-Tac Victory Gear, Fiocchi Ammunition, Fobus Holsters & Pouches, Safariland, Smith & Wesson and Uncle Mike’s Law Enforcement.

Comp-Tac Sponsors This Weekend’s Puerto Rico IDPA Nationals

BERRYVILLE, Ark. – The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) announced that noted holster and accessories manufacturer, the Houston-based Comp-Tac Victory Gear, will be a major sponsor of the 2013 Puerto Rico IDPA National Championship taking place this weekend in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico IDPA Nationals have received significant support from the shooting sports industry. Along with Comp-Tac Victory Gear, the championship is being sponsored by Blade-Tech, Century International Arms, Fiocchi Ammunition, Fobus Holsters & Pouches, Safariland, Uncle Mike’s Law Enforcement and Smith & Wesson.

Warren Claims High Senior Title At Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the fourth time in six years Scott Warren of Warren Tactical Sights has claimed the High Senior title at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship.

Warren, who previously won the title in 2008, 2009 and 2010, finished ninth overall in the match and third Master in the Enhanced Service Pistol division with a final time of 200.08 seconds with 76 points down.

“Scott has always been one of IDPA’s top competitors and among the best pistol shooters in America. Regardless of who’s competing in the match, Scott is going to bring his ‘A’ game and that’s exactly what he did this past weekend at the Smith & Wesson Indoor Nationals,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Second place in the Senior category went to Dave Harrington of Team Panteao, competing as a Master in the ESP division, with 203.66 (54). Team Smith & Wesson’s Jerry Miculek, who won the Enhanced Service Revolver title, finished third among the Seniors with 215.47 (55). Rounding out the top five were Bill Go of Academi with 229.07 (62) as a Master in the Stock Service Pistol division and James Martino, the 2012 defending champ and an ESP Master, who finished with 233,88 (78).

Venezuela’s Zanotti Takes High International At Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – With 19 shooters representing three nations and one U.S. territory all competing for the title of High International, it was Venezuela’s Luis Ricardo Zanotti who came out on top this past weekend at the 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship.

Zanotti, who competed as a Master in the Stock Service Pistol division, led a Venezuelan sweep of the top three spots with a final time of 203.97 and 76 points down. Second place went to the 2012 defending champ Juan Carlos Gonzalez Valdez who competed as a Master in the Enhanced Service Pistol division and finished with 205.52 (31), capturing for Venezuela the coveted title of Most Accurate. Third place went to Carlos Henao, an SSP Sharpshooter, with 288.60 (122).

Rounding out the top five were Mexico’s Fausto Gerard, an SSP Sharpshooter, with 304.19 (121) and Italy’s Federico Iannelli who is an SSP Master and finished with 305.54 (97).

“While we see tremendous growth in IDPA here in the U.S., our membership internationally continues to expand as well. We are so pleased to have a regular presence of international competitors at our major matches and I want to congratulate Luis and Juan Carlos for leading Team Venezuela to victory at the Smith & Wesson Indoor Nationals,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Proulx Claims Junior & Press Titles At Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Competing as an Expert in the Custom Defensive Pistol division at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s (IDPA) 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship, Austin Proulx claimed the High Junior title with a time of 314.79 with 113 points down.

Proulx, who writes for the IDPA’s Tactical Journal magazine, also contested and won the High Press title.

“Everybody at IDPA headquarters could not be happier for Austin. This young man has demonstrated both a talent for shooting IDPA and writing about it, and we look forward to reading his take on the match in an upcoming issue of the Tactical Journal,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Among the Junior shooters, second place went to Lee Wills of Team Para who finished with 347.60 and 134 points down competing in the Enhanced Service Pistol division as a Marksman. Duncan McNaughton, also competing in ESP as a Marksman, finished third with 411.35 and 214 points down.

In the Press category where Proulx faced a cadre of older, more experienced shooters, shooting sports photographer Yamil Sued took second with 351.65 (138) shooting as a Sharpshooter in the Stock Service Pistol division, followed by Bryce Towsley, an ESP Marksman, with 417.29 (162). ShootingUSA’s Jim Scoutten, an SSP Marksman, and John Scoutten, a Marksman in the Enhanced Service Revolver division, filmed the match for an upcoming episode of their popular television show, but when they weren’t filming they competed and finished with 529.54 (237) and 539.77 (222) respectively.

Randi Rogers Goes 5 Straight At Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the fifth year in a row Smith & Wesson and the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) crowned Randi Rogers the High Lady champion of the Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship.

Competing for Comp-Tac Victory Gear where she not only shoots for the team but also manages the holster maker’s marketing efforts, Rogers outgunned a talented group of women by winning nine of the 12 stages and finishing second Master and third overall in the Stock Service Pistol division with a time of 202.60 with 93 points down.

Rogers finished 11th overall among all 324 competitors competing in all five divisions.

“Right now Randi is the dominant female competitor in IDPA, but it’s her desire and ability to go toe-to-toe with her male counterparts that is so impressive. When Randi enters the match she isn’t there just to win High Lady, she in it to win it all. And though she may have beat me handily in the High Lady competition, her performance this year should make all the women in IDPA proud,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

As part of its continued focus on women shooters, Smith & Wesson this year recognized not just the top female shooter but the top three, and honored Michelle Wood as the second High Lady finishing in SSP as a Master with 261.82 (132) and Cindy Bowser as third High Lady with her ESP Expert finish of 263.82 (132).

Lentz Returns As SSR Champ At 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the third time since 2010, Josh Lentz of Team Smith & Wesson took home the Stock Service Revolver title at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s (IDPA) Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship.

Lentz, who also shoots for the XS Sight Systems shooting team and is a Distinguished Master within the division, previously won the SSR title in 2010 and 2011. This year Lentz took the title with a time of 238.02 while shooting just 35 points down.

“Josh is a wonderfully talented revolver shooter who is proving time and time again that he is the one to beat in Stock Service Revolver competition. His win this weekend at Smith & Wesson only solidifies further his place at the top,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Finishing second behind Lentz was the 2012 defending champion and SSR Distinguished Master Joe Linskey who finished second overall in the division with a time of 251.56 and 59 points down. Kirk Crego, another SSR Distinguished Master, placed third overall with 259.09 (40). Tom Becker took first Master finishing fourth overall with 278.54 (63) followed by Gene Gelberger with 284.31 (99).

Elsewhere in the division Ken Ortbach captured first Expert while finishing fifth overall with 299.02 (87). Franco Emilio Jr. took first Sharpshooter with 318.07 (104), which will move him up to Expert class, and Tom Miller took first Marksman with 438.43 (171).

Miculek Takes Another ESR At 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Once again the world’s greatest wheelgun shooter took home the Enhanced Service Revolver title at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s (IDPA) 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship as Jerry Miculek of Team Smith & Wesson topped the division with blistering time of 215.47 shooting just 55 points down.

Miculek, who is ranked a Distinguished Master in the ESR division – IDPA’s highest skill classification – has won this title several times including every year since 2007.

“Well beyond Jerry’s extraordinary ability with a revolver, or with any firearm for that matter, it’s his wonderful personality, humor and southern charm that has endeared him to so many shooters. It is always a great pleasure to watch Jerry in action on an IDPA range, shooting and of course winning,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Finishing second overall behind Miculek was Brian Gonsalves who finished first Expert with a time of 291.79 and 65 points down. Gregg Kratochvil placed third overall and finished first Master with 298.49 (78). Warren Baker, another ESR Master, finished fourth overall with 335.24 (129) followed by T.J. Milam who took first Sharpshooter with 341.61 (127), Sean Cheney, another ESR Sharpshooter, with 345.68 (137), and Andrew Macgray who took first Marksman with 391.56 (131).

Vogel Takes 6th Straight S&W IDPA Indoor Nationals Title With SSP Win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – This past weekend Bob Vogel successfully defended his Stock Service Pistol division title at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s (IDPA) 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship, marking this as the sixth straight year the Team Panteao shooter has won his division at the match.

Vogel, who was the first competitor in IDPA to claim the sport’s Distinguished Master classification in all three pistol divisions, won all but two stages in the championship to outpace his nearest competitor by nearly 30 seconds and finish with a final time of 154.37 with 29 points down.

In addition to claiming the SSP title, Vogel’s finish also earned him High Law Enforcement and High Industry honors.

“Bob Vogel is riding an incredible win streak in IDPA that extends back to the 2007 IDPA Nationals. With his performance this weekend at the Smith & Wesson Indoor Nationals, it’s hard to imagine that win streak won’t continue for some time,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Second place in the SSP division went to Team RangeLog’s Rob Tate who claimed first Master and the High Military Veteran title with his time of 184.16 and 66 points down. Randi Rogers of Team Comp-Tac took second Master and, for the fifth year in a row, the High Lady title posting a final time of 202.60 (93). Third Master went to David Dolio with 203.96 (58) while fourth Master and the High International title went to Luis Ricardo Zanotti of Venezuela who finished with a time of 203.97 (76).

Elsewhere in the division Nick Bedio took first Expert honors with 228.48 (61) and will move up to Master class, while Justin Sitler finished first Sharpshooter with 264.01 (102) and will move up to Expert class. Jack Hamel will move up to Sharpshooter after taking first Marksman with 347.39 (160).

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Barton Nanney claimed the High Military title on the strength of a final time of 281.41 (65) in the SSP division.
