In the Tactical Journal (Vol. 15, Issue 4) you'll find on pages 26-33 the equipment survey results from the 2011 IDPA World Shoot. Looking at the brands of handguns used by competitors one fact stands out above all else, two manufacturers, Glock and Smith & Wesson, dominate the list.

Glock 34

Together the two gun making titans account for 67% of all handguns. They are also the only manufactures that had individual models in the double digits. Glock had the most guns at the match with 37.3% of the shooters choosing Gunny's favorite blaster. Of the 142 Glock pistols used at the World Shoot, the Glock G34 was the most popular model with 62 shooters (16.3%) competing with the longer slide competition model. Right behind it was the G17 which had 57 shooters (15%) campaigning with the company's flagship pistol.

Smith & Wesson had 29.7% of the World Shoot market with a total of 113 pistols and revolvers. Their M&P 9mm pistol accounted for 10.2% of all guns and was used by 39 competitors. The M&P Pro 9mm, S&W's direct challenger to the G34, found its way into the holsters of 18 competitors (4.7%). The last model to break into double digits was the Model 686 revolver from Smith & Wesson with 12 competitors (3.1%) carrying it.

As for the most popular platform at the IDPA World Shoot, the striker-fired pistol, led by Glock and Smith & Wesson models, made up 57% of all the handguns with 217 shooters opting to compete with that design. The venerable 1911 had 96 competitors (25.2%) selecting it. If you were to add in the double-stack variants that number goes up to 111 or 29.1%. Below is a breakout of each brand, the total number of models used and what percentage of the World Shoot competitors each manufacture captured.

The third and final day of the 2012 NRA Show saw Team IDPA meeting with some of the biggest gun makers in the firearms world, including Taurus, whose new CEO, Mark Kresser, talked to Joyce Wilson about shooting a little IDPA himself in the coming months. Joyce Rubino from Colt talked shop, and shooting. And of course, no NRA tour of gun makers would be complete without a visit to Smith & Wesson, which in case you didn't know hosts a little IDPA match and get together each year...just a small event you may have heard people talking about.

Saturday night after Day 2 of the NRA Show, Michael Bane - host of the Outdoor Channel's Shooting Gallery and one of the earliest members of IDPA - hosted a reception for IDPA at the Morgan Street Brewery. The room was packed with show exhibitors and friends of IDPA. Thanks to Panteao Productions guests went home with a copy of the Down Zero and IDPA World Championship DVDs, as well as a signed copy of Michael's book Trail Safe. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Michael Bane, and the Outdoor Channel, for graciously hosting a terrific get together with great friends...and really good beer.

Day 2 at the NRA Show was amazingly busy thanks to rain in St. Louis. With literally tens of thousands of people on the show floor, getting around for Team IDPA got to be a challenge. Thankfully we made it through another day and another round of meetings with sponsors and friends. Of course, for some people there always seems to be time to check out the guns.

St. Louis Here We Come...

The whole of NRA Nation is gathering this weekend in St. Louis for the 2012 National Rifle Association Annual Meeting & Exhibit. And IDPA will be there too.

Joyce Wilson and some key IDPA folks – think Tiger Team Facilitator Terry 'Bubba' Burba – will be roaming the show floor meeting with industry leaders, IDPA sponsors and Tactical Journal advertisers. There might even be a little time spent checking out new guns.

The NRA Show, as it's known, is one of the largest trade shows in the firearms industry, second only to the world famous SHOT Show. Attendance estimates range anywhere from 'Holy Cow' to 'Oh. My. God.' but with local St. Louis weather calling for rain all weekend, it's likely there will be well over 60,000 attendees.

If you are one of those 60,000+ attending this year's show then be sure to be on the look out for Joyce, Bubba and the others. And be sure to stop them and say 'Hi.' Also, don't be shy about visiting the many generous sponsors and advertisers that have helped make IDPA the fastest growing shooting sport in America....and the best.
