Brandon Wright Takes ESP Title At Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Brandon Wright, captain of the International Training, Inc. shooting team (Team ITI), captured the Enhanced Service Pistol title at the International Defensive Pistol Association’s (IDPA) 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship this past weekend.

Wright outpaced his nearest competitor, James McGinty, by 11.61 seconds, winning six of the 12 stages to finish with a final time of 166.01 with 34 points down.

“Brandon put in a dominating performance this year at the Smith & Wesson Indoor Nationals, finishing with the second best time of any shooter in any division. With his win this past Saturday IDPA congratulates Brandon on becoming IDPA’s newest Distinguished Master,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Second place overall in the division went to McGinty, one of IDPA’s Distinguished Masters, who finished with a final time of 177.62 (59). Third place overall in the division went to Wright’s fellow Team ITI teammate, and Team RangeLog member, Morgan Allen who took first Master with three stage wins and a time of 182.35 (53). Team Comp-Tac’s Gordon Carrell took second Master with 185.30 (51), followed by Scott Warren of Warren Tactical Sights who took third Master as well as the overall title of High Senior with 200.08 (76), and Team RangeLog’s Ravin Perry finishing fourth Master with 202.96 (111).

Elsewhere within the ESP division Eric Phinney took first Expert with 204.94 (63) which moves him up to Master class. Timothy Smith finished first Sharpshooter with 263.52 (81) to move him up to Expert while Jimmy McColgan claimed first Marksman 287.73 (93) and will move up to Sharpshooter. Cindy Bowser took top lady within ESP, finishing third among all women with 263.27 (84). Dan Smith won the High Distinguished Senior title with 276.09 (98). The coveted title of Most Accurate went to Venezuela’s Juan Carlos Gonzalez Valdez 205.52 (31).

The 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship took place February 21-23 at the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center in Springfield, Mass., drawing many of the shooting sports' top pistol shooters from 28 states, one U.S. territory and three foreign nations.

Dan Burwell, IDPA’s New 3 Division Distinguished Master With CDP Win At S&W

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For just the second time since establishing the new classification, the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) crowned a three-division Distinguished Master when Dan Burwell of Team Smith & Wesson won the Custom Defensive Pistol title at the 2013 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor National Championship this past weekend.

Burwell, who was already a Distinguished Master – the highest skill classification in IDPA – in the Stock Service Pistol and Enhanced Service Pistol divisions, took the title with a final time of 192.01 seconds with 65 points down.

“Dan put on a brilliant shooting display winning three of the 12 stages while facing off against both Glenn Shelby and David Olhasso who are each past CDP champions. With this win, Dan becomes our sport’s second three division Distinguished Master and I join the entire IDPA community in congratulating him on a job well done,” said Joyce Wilson, executive director of IDPA.

Second place in the division, finishing just 4.4 seconds out of first, was the defending CDP champion, Glenn Shelby of the Wilson Combat shooting team. Shelby finished with a time of 196.41 with 53 points down. Third in the division went to another Team Smith & Wesson shooter, David Olhasso, with 201.92 (83). Both Shelby and Olhasso are classified as Distinguished Masters within the CDP division.

Fourth in the division finishing as first Master was Chris Chamberlin with a time of 203.11 (65). Finishing fifth overall in the division, and second Master, was Craig Buckland shooting for Wolff Springs.

Elsewhere in the division, Ryan Spencer who placed first Expert with 213.91 (54) will move up to Master class while Dave Corsino moves to Expert class after taking first Sharpshooter with 286.75 (108). Junior shooter Austin Proulx, an Expert in CDP, took High Junior and High Press honors with a time of 314.79 (113) while Mike Strangia took first Marksman with 416.44 (199).

S&W Indoor Nationals Stage 1: Safe Passage

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy has the prime stage location at the S&W Indoor Nationals and for good reason. The final stage preview is the USCGA's 'Safe Passage' which is the first stage of the match. It was designed by CWO Chad Barber, USCG, and is sponsored, of course, by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy... Semper Paratus

CSO: Your CSO for this stage will be CWO Chad Barber, USCG.

SCENARIO: Knowing the area you take heavy precautions, you’ve been here before. You’ve just moored up after a quick day on the water. Now however, a gang of thugs is set on taking you and your family off shore for some retaliation and a long swim holding your anchor. You have other plans.

PROCEDURE: Start Standing at P1, gun loaded to div capacity and holstered.

At the signal, draw and engage T1 on the move to P2. At P2 engage T2 through T4 with two shots each from cover. Once clear move to P3 engaging T5 on the move to P3. At P3 engage T6 through T8 with two shots each. Once you leave cover you may not re-engage former targets (extreme angled shots will impact range walls resulting in a match DQ. T3 is an UP/Down and is a disappearing target. T4 is a swinger.
