BERRYVILLE, Ark. – Team Colt’s Mark Redl took home top honors at the 2013 Smith & Wesson Live Free Or Die State IDPA Championship, winning both the Custom Defensive Pistol and the King of New England titles.

After his main challenger, Craig Buckland of team Wolff Gunsprings/Tactical Defense Solutions, suffered an ammunition failure at the chronograph resulting in a match disqualification for equipment, Redl outpaced his nearest competitor by 5.35 seconds to take the Live Free Or Die title.

In the King of New England series presented by Apex Tactical Specialties, Redl easily claimed the CDP portion of the series by more than 19 seconds.

The King of New England series recognizes the top shooters competing in the Massachusetts State Championship, the New England Regional and the Live Free Or Die, with the title going to the competitor with the top cumulative score, in their division, from four pre-selected stages from each of the three championships.

“Congratulations to Mark on both his Live Free Or Die CDP win and for taking the 2013 King of New England CDP title,” said Ken Lambert, match director for the Smith & Wesson Live Free Or Die.

Redl finished the match with five stage wins and a final time of 305.16 seconds with 98 points down. Second pace went to Bob Biehl, first Expert, with 310.51 (51). Biehl also finished second in the King of New England series with 345.33 to Redl’s 325.91.

Third place went to the first Master, Andrew Marocchini, with 315.50 (57). Aaron Haines finished fourth with 325.36 (98) while Matt Holmes placed fifth with 330.37 (103).

Elsewhere in the division, Kevin Wagner won first Sharpshooter with 403.94 (114). Cristian Arcilla finished first Marksman with 458.34 (166), and Heather Kies took first Novice with 698.03 (244).

The sold out 2013 Smith & Wesson Live Free Or Die State IDPA Championship took place October 18-20 and was hosted by the Pioneer Sportsmen Club in Dunbarton, N.H.

BERRYVILLE, Ark. – One of IDPA's biggest championship events just got bigger thanks to the support of firearms industry icon Colt's Manufacturing Company and the hearing protection firm EAR-East, which according to officials with the International Defensive Pistol Association have both signed on as sponsors of this weekend's Carolina Cup.

Colt and EAR-East join Remington Arms and Smith & Wesson, the Carolina Cup's two major sponsors, as well as Blade-Tech, Comp-Tac, Federal Premium Ammunition, GlockTriggers.com, Panteao Productions, Precision Delta, Safariland and Trijicon in supporting the championship.

Colt and EAR-East will each sponsor one of the 16 stages in the match. The Carolina Cup takes place June 14-16 in Oxford, North Carolina with over 370 of IDPA's top competitors expected to attend.

“With the Carolina Cup just days away, excitement for the match is building,” said Scott Ruby, sponsor coordinator for the Carolina Cup. “This year we'll have a record number of shooters competing and that's thanks to the great support we've received from the industry and companies like Colt and EAR-East.”

The Carolina Cup is one of IDPA's three major championships and will be held at The Range in Oxford, where shooters are expected to put upwards of 75,000 rounds downrange in pursuit of titles in Custom Defensive Pistol, Enhanced Service Pistol, Stock Service Pistol, Stock Service Revolver and Enhanced Service Revolver, the five divisions in IDPA competition.

A competitor slot to the Carolina Cup is one of the most highly sought after in the sport due to the match's reputation of providing one of the most challenging courses of fire. Stages are known for their creativity and how they test a shooter's entire skill set. Due to both the match's popularity and the explosive growth in IDPA membership, the Carolina Cup has been sold out since early March.

Founded in 1996, the International Defensive Pistol Association is the international governing body for IDPA competition which offers shooters a fun, safe, and challenging format to practice and test their gun handling skills through defensive-based scenarios. In the Tactical Journal (Vol. 15, Issue 4) you'll find on pages 26-33 the equipment survey results from the 2011 IDPA World Shoot. Looking at the brands of handguns used by competitors one fact stands out above all else, two manufacturers, Glock and Smith & Wesson, dominate the list.

Glock 34

Together the two gun making titans account for 67% of all handguns. They are also the only manufactures that had individual models in the double digits. Glock had the most guns at the match with 37.3% of the shooters choosing Gunny's favorite blaster. Of the 142 Glock pistols used at the World Shoot, the Glock G34 was the most popular model with 62 shooters (16.3%) competing with the longer slide competition model. Right behind it was the G17 which had 57 shooters (15%) campaigning with the company's flagship pistol.

Smith & Wesson had 29.7% of the World Shoot market with a total of 113 pistols and revolvers. Their M&P 9mm pistol accounted for 10.2% of all guns and was used by 39 competitors. The M&P Pro 9mm, S&W's direct challenger to the G34, found its way into the holsters of 18 competitors (4.7%). The last model to break into double digits was the Model 686 revolver from Smith & Wesson with 12 competitors (3.1%) carrying it.

As for the most popular platform at the IDPA World Shoot, the striker-fired pistol, led by Glock and Smith & Wesson models, made up 57% of all the handguns with 217 shooters opting to compete with that design. The venerable 1911 had 96 competitors (25.2%) selecting it. If you were to add in the double-stack variants that number goes up to 111 or 29.1%. Below is a breakout of each brand, the total number of models used and what percentage of the World Shoot competitors each manufacture captured.
